CBT
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy focuses on how we think (cognition); how we feel (emotion); and how we act because of the interaction of thoughts and feelings (behavior). Strategies involved with CBT include learning to recognize one’s distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them. It is also helpful in gaining a better understanding of the behavior and motivation of others.
Distortions often portray our partners and relationships in a more negative light. Cognitions paint the way partners process information in response to their partner’s behaviors, which guide their interpretation of events as well as expectations towards the other and the relationship. By using CBT skills, we can find ways to reframe our thoughts and manage reactivity toward our partner.
