Trauma-Informed Care
“Triggered” and “trauma” aren’t just buzzwords or trends. Trauma is real and has deep physical and emotional repercussions for those who have experienced an acute event (such as a car accident or witnessing a tragic event) or complex situations (such as repeated or prolonged exposure to things like abuse and neglect, bullying, and religious or racial systems). Trauma has a profound impact on the brain, body, and behavior. Symptoms include emotional distress, dissociation, anxiety, depression, nightmares, and hyper-vigilance.
Complex trauma is also known as developmental trauma. Occurring in childhood, it is disruptive to a child’s brain development and ability to self-regulate and manage emotions. The impact of abuse, neglect, unstable environments, and domestic violence during formative years can manifest in harmful ways by adulthood. For example, struggles with substance abuse, people pleasing, shame spirals or guilt, health problems, and trust issues. Trauma-informed therapy understands these are survival strategies and prioritizes creating a safe and trusting environment that focuses on healing by building coping skills and regulating the nervous system.
